Art, in one form or another, has been part of Nigel Morgan’s life since the age of five. His earliest art inspirations were the few, but impactful illustrations in the Encyclopedia Britannica. Although most of the images were black and white at that time, the colored sections, especially those that depicted wildlife, were captivating. As a young novice developing his craft, Trinidadian artist David Moore also inspired Nigel. Moore’s mindfulness in depicting the old ways of Caribbean life were unlike anything Nigel had seen. Soon, he began to follow the works of Norman Rockwell, Thomas Kinkade, Vincent Van Gogh, and William Steig.
As a Communication Design & Illustration major at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, Nigel aspired to become a wildlife illustrator, but teaching began to weave its way into his life, as he was often approached by onlookers while painting in the parks, cafés, and hang-out places throughout Brooklyn. The questions, “Do you teach art? Do you teach kids?” were often asked of him, and it was in the main seating area of the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch that the opportunity to teach youth, adults and older adults was presented to him.
Teaching art is something that Nigel has grown increasingly enthusiastic about. Grateful for the influence and wisdom imparted by the many instructors in his life, Nigel sees it as a privilege to give back to the community in which he lives and was educated. One of his goals is to have an art studio that promising artists of all ages can come to for lessons and an opportunity to highlight their work.

Class 1
Introduction to the supplies
Learning the various ways to hold a charcoal stick and pencil, using the thickness and thinness of lines to achieve a drawing. We will start by doing an automatic drawing for a warm-up. Then working from a photograph, we will draw a simple object.
Class 2
Learning to shade using the cross-hatch method
Photo Reference – a simple still-life composition
Capturing a three-dimensional form using just lines. We will start by doing an automatic drawing for a warm-up. Then working from a photograph, we will draw and shade a simple composition.
Class 3
Introducing blending tools; blending stumps, paper towel
Photo Reference – a slightly more challenging still-life than the last
Again, we will start by doing an automatic drawing for a warm-up. Then working from a photograph, we will draw and shade the image using blending tools to achieve a softer, more realistic finish to our drawing.
Class 4
Using the Paper to our advantage
Photo Reference – A simple image of a house
Capturing texture with charcoal. We will start by doing an automatic drawing for a warm-up. Then working from a photograph, we will draw and shade from our reference. Focus will be placed on using the texture of the paper to our advantage; emphasizing the tooth of the paper in some areas and toning it down in other areas.
Class 5
Understanding the purpose of ‘VALUE’ in our drawing. Learning how to use a value scale.
Photo Reference – A seascape
How the achieve the proper level of light, dark and middle values in our artwork, our warm up time will be shorter as we wish to spend more time on the main drawing.
Class 6
More of Value Study
Photo Reference – A landscape image
Repeating what we have learnt in class 5 using a different image. How the achieve the proper level of light, dark and middle values in our artwork, our warm up time will be shorter as we wish to spend more time on the main drawing.
Class 7
Using the Eraser as a Drawing tool
Photo Reference – A Still-life composition
We will try working in reverse, toning our paper in charcoal then erasing away our light values, and adding more charcoal to get the darker values. We will start by doing an automatic drawing for a warm-up. Then working from the photograph to create our drawing.
Class 8
The training wheels are off
The class will now be given several photographs to choose from (from simple to more complex) Each student will draw the image that they prefer, using any one of or combining various techniques shown in class. I will critique those that wish to share as we draw to the end of the session.

Mr. Nigel Morgan is truly a talented and an amazing Artist, which also makes him a wonderful Teacher. He teaches charcoal drawing, painting with watercolor and acrylic, drawing & painting with ink, pastel, all of which I've taken multiple times. All the courses are different and there's always something new to learn. I love how Mr. Morgan starts with the fundamentals; step by step drawing basic shapes, learning values and mixing colors and building upon that. When my work gets critiqued, I get honest feedback, not just your artwork looks great when it really isn't. Mr. Morgan tells me where I can improve on and where it looks great. I really strive to do my best in his class along with so many other students.
With the vast knowledge of art that Mr. Morgan knows, he is truly a gem. His classes get filled up so fast, within hours of his class being announced. Mr. Morgan is like a Black Friday sale, everybody waiting on line to get in on the deal, if I need to shove someone in order to get in, I will lol. You definitely won't regret taking any classes with Mr. Morgan. Even if you think you can't draw, by the end of his class you will, you will start out as a block of marble and by the end you turn into the statue of David.

Nigel Morgan is a skilled professional teacher of art. He is personally skilled in all aspects of drawing and painting. His demonstrations are always on point and easy to follow. He is extremely organized especially for teaching on line classes. His web site is invaluable for understanding homework assignments and being able to share or work with fellow students. He gives very appropriate feedback that aids in each students development. He is also fun and has a light friendly personality that is very pleasant to be around
Barbara Scharf

Nigel's demonstrations are excellent. He explains what he is doing at a pace a student can follow. Nigel explains the color scheme and how to arrange the colors on the palate. His critiques are also very helpful. I took several classes with him online.
Betty Samuels

Nigel Morgan is a most patient and helpful teacher. He is a wonderful artist and teaches and demonstrates step by step whatever he is teaching. By the end of the course every student is able to complete some impressive art work. Certainly, his classes are very worthwhile.

Hello Nigel
I took a few classes last year on Zoom
I am thankful to you because I learnt how to draw
I was so immature painter
I like your critiques because it is how one learns
Also learnt to see the world differently in the retrospective of different values
Irina
I have attended several of Mr. Morgan’s classes.
I have learned so much about color theory, composition, values etc. During his demonstrations he gives us step by step instructions on how to achieve the final outcome, time to work on our own and a personal critique of our work. Class is fun and challenging.
Olga A.

Nigel brings out your creativity in a non-judgmental and supportive environment. Wonderful way to learn!

our confidence in the arts. I have greatly benefited from your comments

Nigel is a Great, multifaceted Artist and Teacher. His
teachings encompass
many, many different styles and forms and I have learned
many styles from his
virtual classes. I am a beginner artist and have
always found drawing very
hard and Nigel has taught me how to draw and paint by
focusing on shapes
instead of worrying about getting the lines drawn correctly,
and then to
proceed on from there. I was pleasantly surprised with
some of my completed
drawings and paintings. Whether you're a beginner student /
artist or
advanced, Nigel gently pushes you to do better by critiques
of your work,
always focusing on where you can do better.
My favorite class was when Nigel taught us how to make the
"POP OUT" cards. I
am sure that everyone that learns from Nigel will be very
happy they found his
classes. I know I am!!!
Muriel
A talented teaching artist who is very experienced and has
developed interesting art curricula and lesson plans for his workshops.
Disciplined, funny, skilled, and always on point. Who you ask is this person?
Nigel Morgan of course!

Signing up for an art class with Nigel was the best decision ever! I was fortunate to study side by side with him before classes became virtual, and boy was it worth it! He is is very easy going, patient with his students and very knowledgeable. Best of all, he's the caring type of teacher, the one you wish you had in high school.
Nigel takes pride in his teaching and goes above and beyond to help his students excel no matter the level of experience they may have. For me that's what makes learning with him so special and magical.
I always look forward on taking an art class with him. Nigel is the best teacher I ever had, and will be your's too.
